Creativity is a central source of meaning in our lives... [and] when we are involved in it, we feel that we are living more fully than during the rest of life.
-Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Write something to suit yourself and many people will like it; write something to suit everybody and scarcely anyone will care for it.
-Jesse Stuart

Pictures of Silver is a writing group dedicated to creating, sharing and commenting on long freewrites and short stories. Every two weeks a story prompt will be given, and at the end of the period members will submit their work for others to read and comment on. (Early submissions are fine.)

General Schedule (subject to some change)

Community Rules

1. Please make a reasonable effort to participate and to produce a well-thought-out piece of work (ideally a long freewrite or short story) with a recognizable development and point, if not a plot. ;-) Stream-of-consciousness freewrites are beautiful, but the goal of this group tends more toward developed stories with at least a little forethought. Remember, you have two weeks to work on each story.

2. Also make a reasonable effort to give constructive feedback on other members' entries. This includes positive and negative feedback, unless the writer has specifically requested to the contrary. However, avoid pointless negative criticism ("wow, this was awful") in favor of constructive comments ("passage x didn't move me; sentence y lost me") structured to help the writer grow.

To Join

First, request membership in the community; then fill out a simple application (below) and send it to astonishing2006 AT hotmail DOT com. I will read it and show it to other writers to accept, reject or edit/critique. The application may be waived if you have a reference from an existing member. If so, please have them refer you to me or email me with the reference after requesting membership.

Once accepted, come introduce yourself to the community!

Questions and suggestions are highly welcome!

Application

Personal information

Name (required)
Email (required)
Reason for wanting membership (required)
Age (optional)
Number of years writing (estimates are totally fine; optional)

Writing Sample

There are two options for the writing sample. You may:

1. Submit something you've written before: it must be at least 600 words (about 3/4 of a page) and no more than 2,000 words (the length of a shortish short story). Excerpts are fine.

2. Submit something based on the prompt for a current or past group challenge: it must be at least 600 words and no more than 2,000 words. Again, excerpts are fine.

Send both portions to astonishing AT hotmail DOT com and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Remember: It is important to request membership before submitting an application. This is not my primary email and I will only look for applications if I see that a membership request has been made.
